[2003] Origins[]
Upon the founding of the Justice League during 2001, many of the members within the group had "sidekicks" and protégés that they mentored. As the missions with the League got more advanced. Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen would frequently set meet ups and playdates to keep their proteges entertained while they went on more dangerous missions.
Not everyone would join these meet-ups though, particularly Roy Harper as he viewed it as nothing more than a waste of time and would frequently ditch the group and return back to Starling City. Garth xil'Idyl and Tula xin'Marius would join occasionally as well, however they would usually prioritize their studies within Atlantis more, and with Superman gone Kara In-Ze would usually step up to protect Metropolis all on her own. Leaving Dick Grayson, Wally West and Donna Troy to participate and bond over their frustrations of their respective mentors underestimating them
On a particular day however, seeing a distress signal in the Justice League headquarters and having a sense of wanting to prove themselves to their mentors. The three set out to investigate the location of where this signal is being emitted from. The signal would lead them to Jump City, California where they would uncover a secret trafficking ring involving meta-human children and an organization known as H.I.V.E. Along the way they cross paths with the Doom Patrol, it turns out that they were the ones that sent the signal to alert the League of the organization's presence as they needed to rescue someone important and needed back up. Lying to his teeth Wally exclaimed that they were the backup that they needed, seeing through the obvious lie, the Doom Patrol just looked at him with confusion and disappointment, and one particular member laughing uncontrollably at him. Embarrassed, Wally exclaimed "we'll show you!" and urged the other two to go with him, however they wouldn't be easily swayed by him, and thus he ran in the facility all on his own. Seeing the obvious danger that he just put himself the Doom Patrol decided to split the group, with Robotman and Beast Boy tagging along with Robin and Wondergirl. Unbeknownst to them, Wally's presence already alerted the guards and the whole team were incapacitated and captured.
Waking up in his cell, Dick quickly devised a plan to escape and free the other captured children. Anticipating this H.I.V.E's main head sent out an elite team to hunt down the escaped boy wonder. Using the skills that Bruce has thought him, escaping through the halls and vents of the facility was an easy feat for him. However a group known as the Fearsome Five intercepted his escape and overwhelmed him, using his wits and skills in hacking he created a diversion that made him barely escape in the nick of time, hiding in one of the cells to recover his injuries. "THAT WAS SO COOL!" a loud voice exclaimed at his side, "Holy crap! I can't believe I doubted you before, but now I am such a HUGE FAN" he looks besides him to see a familiar face. It's the green skinned member of the Doom Patrol, he introduces himself as Gar but he can call him Beast Boy. The two join forces and together they make it through waves of heavily armed guards within the facility, along the way they are joined by Victor Stone and Rachel Roth, but before arriving to the designated cells of Kid Flash and Wondergirl. They come across two members of the Fearsome Five, pissed at how Dick initially embarrassed them, both Plasmus and Mister Twister went on the offensive and a fight broke out, using their respective abilities and with Dick's leadership they managed to win and escape the fight unscathed.
Now that the trio has been reunited, both Dick and Donna instantly scold and berate Wally for his recklessness, and in return he apologizes for his stupidity and arrogance. The group take a break to carefully plan what their next move would be, Gar suggests that they look for the other Doom Patrol members, while Donna suggests to try and contact the league for help and wait for them to arrive. Dick first chooses the second option, and attempts to contact the League but with no luck, as something is jamming their respective communicators, Gar tries the same for his team but to no avail as well. So they take the latter option, and hope to find the other Doom Patrol members within the facility. Frustrated and irritated that a bunch of kids have bested them time and time again, the head of the facility sends every member of H.I.V.E to immobilize the teens, he also ordered that they send in one of their most valuable assets "Project Starbolt". With everyone within this facility now hunting them down, Dick and the rest of the team uses this opportunity to snoop around the place to look around for crucial evidence that would incriminate H.I.V.E or look for any signs of the other Doom Patrol members that are currently with them. They don't find much and their files are heavily encrypted for Dick to hack into, what they do find though are 4 giant tube-like containers that contain kids their age screaming in pain as a substance later known as "Tar" is surrounding their bodies. Seeing their distressed states, naturally they had to try and find a way to get them out of it, However as they begin to release the captured individuals only one of them got out alive. It was a girl with blonde hair that was around their age range, dazed and confused she immediately attacked the group with her new found earth-related abilities. As the situation died down a bit, she introduced herself as Ashley Howard, with a new ally within their ranks the group ventured forward to continue looking for signs of help.
